Tuesday morning. The Flight 93 Memorial. (Click to show/hide comments)
A quiet, foggy, somber reminder that the fight still rages against those who want to see our freedoms taken away,
the freedoms that we too often take for granted. The (new) Flight 93 Memeorial was being constructed as we visited.
I hope they can somehow maintain the stark reality that the current site portrays so well: you drive through local back
roads to arrive at a muddy parking lot in the middle of nowhere. Well, more accurately, in the middle of normal
everyday life for those living around. That, for me, is the message of Flight 93: we are all affected by the new
battle against terror. It's not just the military people who will live on the front lines of this struggle; it will
be businessmen and mothers, husbands and wives, just people traveling, trying to get home. All focusing on the mundane, trivial details
of daily life, until they found themselves facing the choice to lose their lives to save the lives of others. To
"pay the price of freedom" that we quote so often in Memorial Day speeches... without ever considering that
we could someday face that price tag ourselves.
