Tuesday night. Dinner as the guests of the Francis Scott Key American Legion Post 11 (Click to show/hide comments)
The crowd has been getting a little restless, having been trapped in vehicles for a very large portion of
nearly two days now, so a night of fun on the town was called for... and the American Legion answered
the call. They provided a fabulous dinner for the veterans and volunteers (who feared we'd be shipped
off the McDonalds when we first heard an ivitation had been extended to the vets) and a simple time
of food, sharing around the tables, and fun entertainment. The jokes were so bad, people actually laughed,
and a good time was had by all.
The post commander had to leave us for the funeral of a serviceman killed overseas, a sacrifice that meant
a great deal to the group I was seated with. It made me realize that I too often take the news about
overseas fatalities as a fact of life, or evaluate them in terms of political ideology or international
expediency. Too often I forget that each comes with a family who understands the cost of freedom more
intimately than I do, and I should be ashamed at my willingness to trivialize this life-and-death
struggle. Coconut cream pie will now come with a hard reminder for me in the future.
